The Hang Gang's 'Icons' custom show happens tonight at Fullcircle Gallery in Leeds - from what I've seen so far its going to be quite a show with pals Luc, Holly & Ralph all delivering good style - unlike me.. 'Frankenstein's Nibbler' will not be appearing - I totally blew it & couldn't get the thing finished in time..

My apologies & thanks to Barry for being so cool about it & total 'Dad respect' for managing to pull an entire show together as a new dad while I couldn't even manage to finish one measly custom.. Seeing a bit of a pattern here after NYCC Medievals arrived late.. Hmm

When time & space go weird - the Nibbler is often somewhere around - but quite how a gremlinish gang of flying monkeys came to be working the lift in an early 80s German version of a notorious lower Manhattan hotel is anyone's guess.. Sorry it's been a while !! At last though - as the evenings draw shorter & the dank autumn mist shrouds Fishtank Castle - strange mechanical sounds once more echo around its ancient walls - as a few new projects take shape.... ( I do like this time of year ;)

Sadly I won't be making the trip to NYCC - but The Nibbler will !! Ralph has engineered a new band of 'Hello Toys' Medievals - Flying Monkey Attack !!! More deets soon..

Instead I hope to be taking the slightly shorter ( but no less arduous ) trek North - for the Hang Gang Icons custom show - where I'll be bringing the biggest Nibbler yet - Frankensteined together from - amongst other parts - a 400% Bearbrick..

But before any of that we have a mega Triple Header Release slated for one week from today - Friday 30th September !!! All New Real x Nibbler 'Mechanibblers' !! More of the original deco version from SDCC ( Anime Brunch II - 2nd Breakfast !! ) PLUS the online debut of the Fishtank Castle Playset !!!

The metallic free sprays combine perfectly with the masked deco on the Mechas - all finished off with an eerie green glow - my thanks to Mori-sensei !!

Also Ali & Phil at Morpheus formulated the sickest acid yellow / green slime urethane imaginable for my 'Fishtank Slime' Castles.. The original idea sketch for a Fishtank Castle 'ad' below sums up my reaction when I saw the first cast - check Phil Reed's BattleGrip review here..

SDCC & All the Weirdness

Back home & its raining - this is reality.. The plastic sunshine trip of SDCC wore off over 9+ hours on the plane - but I'll be getting flashbacks for a while - especially some scenes, like the last half hour of Paul Kaiju's house party - when things got weird with a green inflatable reindeer and a gorilla suit..

The trip began with a burger in Nibblers - a downtown LA diner - which happens to be situated right next to Union Station where we caught our train down to San Diego..

This was the first of a few uncanny events. The timing of customs releasing my package from Tokyo ( thanks Mori-san :) as well as a series of bizarre numerical co-incidences led me to believe the Marriot ( hotel of Matt, Jesse & Ralph - whose mystical power & facial hair gives them a suitably Arthurian style ) may be situated directly on a Ley line..

The con itself has an unreal feel at the best of times - where else would you see Adam West, LL Cool J & Rowdy Roddy Piper all in the same day ? - but this one was extra weird..

I've got a lot of people to thank. Don & Paul - thanks for all your help getting my stuff there and to Ralph ( amazing to finally meet you man - you are at least twice as crazy as I thought you'd be :) & Holly ( who took SDCC by storm ) for the totally amazing work on our collaborations..

Thanks also to the bloggers who posted my stuff from near & afar - especially Andy, Phil & Kirkland..

I don't see nearly enough of my good friends Rob & Luc these days - so was a bonus to be able to hang out with them - was great to see Marc again ( thanks for the CD - gonna listen to it today ), toy conoisseur Dr Kent and old Hasbro friends John, Vickie & Angus..

In truth I really shouldn't have been there at all but I'm so glad I was.. If this does turn out to be the last time Matt Doughty & Jesse Moore take a booth at SDCC I would hate to have missed it. My thanks to Matt & Jesse above all others.. Jesse it was great getting to know you better & Matt - you never cease to amaze me - your creativity, your generosity, the number of burgers you can put away.. Actually I think its not the hotel - its you the power flows thru man !!

Finally extra thanks to my travelling companion Ali - the Niquil Ninja - who made a lot of new friends & stayed out of jail..

I don't know if I'll make it back to SDCC - I hope so - but if I don't - I'll take this. I've been to three SDCC's now & this was the best..

The mysterious Ralph Niese AKA Bruno Orbit has rendered these weird scenes in a way that the human brain can process - but only just !! The builds themselves are extraordinary - the Armoured Pheyaos borrows a bridge piece in the construction that only Matt himself could conceive - which in itself makes it unique.. Shutting up shop here for the Christmas break so time to share this years card.. The idea just popped into my head - main influence is the illustration below from a book of carols I had as a kid.. It was always really Christmassy to me despite staying away from cliched festive imagery..

The other influences are 70's sci-fi films ( all the ones where we started to see people aboard space craft just hanging out ) and the lost in space vibe of Ullysses 31 ( think thats where the beards came from ;)

Some cool stuff coming up in the first part of next year - Real X Nibbler, new characters in resin, more collabs and my first contribution to a custom show in 2 yrs..

Real X Nibbler

I saw Real X Head toys for the first time in 2008 & picked up a couple while I was working in the US.. Co-incidentally just before I headed back to the UK Matt Doughty showed me a Real Head Mini he was playing around with - he'd just got back from Japan fired up from meeting Mori for the first time.. Right after I got back ( fired up from meeting Matt! ) I sculpted the first Nibbler..

Cut to 2010 & enter the Real X Nibbler !! I still can't believe this amazing triple collab happened.. Working with Mori has been pretty amazing.. Not just a creative visionary but truly a master craftsman Mori took my initial design and re-interpreted it RxH style - creating the most amazing piece of vinyl - right in every proportion & impossible to put down.. My thanks to Mori & also to sculptor Tsuke who realised the design flawlessly..

The third collaborator Matt I constantly have reasons to thank - for coming up with this crazy idea the biggest thank you yet dude :)

Thanks too Don for your dedication to global figure development & the art of the Crossover !!

Stay tuned to this blog for a proper reveal soon - plus details of the various Real X Nibbler releases coming up - starting with some unpainteds.. Final words on SDCC & a look ahead..

Firstly - I was stupid enough not to take any snaps of the table before I started selling stuff - so I'm really grateful to my new friend Ayako Takagi (Uamou) for sending over some great pics taken by her brother Tetsuya - thank you both :)

Looking ahead - the Future Nibbler online release looks like it won't happen much before October - the body is being re-tooled to improve the fits & there are other secret upgrades so I hope it'll be worth the wait..

Meanwhile - as a sort of countdown to the release - check out 'The Snacks Of Infinity' featuring The Nibbler & other characters from the world of Glyos - which will build panel by panel over the next few months..

You may have heard - the first batch of Future Nibblers went too far into the future - and missed the Con..

Bound for Onell HQ they vanished - pulled into a black hole or stuck in customs - there's no way to know.. A call went out to Morpheus who fired up 'old Greasy' one more time & created a NEW batch - fewer in number - but with sweeter fits !

As a result of this last minute replacement the SDCC edition is INTENSELY limited ( don't worry - Future Nibbler will get a full online release soon :) and will be available only at the Destantula session ( Tarantulas VS Jesse Destasio ) 11am - 1pm Sat 24th July @ Global Figure Symposium - Stand #4937 - hosted by Matt & Datadub..

Might have some Tee Shirts, Stickers & a few Pocket Nibblers too :D

The replacement nibblers are all but complete…… No3 has taken some time but the Professor believes he will have ironed out the glitches before noon.

The transparent teleportation device has been programmed…..We are just waiting for the machine unit YCM (or “Greasy” as he’s know to the crew) to finish it’s previous tasking.

The style we wanted for the art was a vintage weird sci-fi illustration style - the kind of thing you'd find in a late 70's early 80's Dr Who Annual & Ralph hit it perfectly..

Check out Modelmaking student Stuart Beardow's Action Figure Design project - part of his degree at the Arts University College in Bournemouth..

After chatting to industry heavyweights *cough* Ali @ Morpheus & myself, Stuart embarked on the project using digital sculpting & 3D printing techniques ( even overcoming problems with 'Boolean Unioning' ) to realise his designs for these awesome looking figures which have fully interchangeable parts.

Hopefully we'll see some finished colour samples available later this year ! News & more about the design & prototyping process here at Stuarts Project Blog..

Happy New Year ! & welcome to 2010 ( or ZOID as its been dubbed by Phil Corbett & others ).. I've got to get back into the swing after the lay off - starting with the final wave of Winter Nibblers in a couple of weeks - featuring 'Von' Nibbler & 'Magic' Nibbler.. Coming after that I'm counting 6 separate projects slated for 2010 - keep it Chipfork Afrocomb for heads up on those..

A couple of other things I want to mention - mysterious masters of the dark arts of toy creation Morpheus - who manufactured the 'slushie' slush moulded Winter Nibbler bodies for me - posted a movie of their slush moulding machine in action ( actually making Wave #X at the time ) check that out on their blog here..

Secondly - check out the custom Glyos figure above ( made using a bonus 'Street Nibbler' head ) by Phil Reed of the excellent BattleGrip.. These heads were all sent out unpainted so its great to see a customised version ! Check out more of Phil's Glyos customs at his flickr..
